San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, the 2021 3rd overall pick, has “Really struggled” during Friday’s session, according to The Athletic’s David Lombard.

During the practice, Lance received the fewest pass attempts compared to fellow quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

The young signal-caller was only given 4 opportunities to showcase his skills. However, out of those attempts, he managed to complete just 1 pass.

What’s more, two of his three incompletions were considered “gimmes,” signifying easy completions that he was unable to connect with.

While this is just one day of Training Camp practice, it is undoubtedly a cause for concern, especially considering the high expectations that came with the 49ers’ decision to trade up and select Lance with the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

On the other hand, 2022 7th round pick Brock Purdy is showing promise as a potential franchise quarterback. Purdy notably went undefeated in the regular season during his rookie year, solidifying him at the starting spot.

Additionally, the team has brought in former New York Jets 2018 3rd overall pick, Sam Darnold, who could potentially take over the backup role ahead of Trey Lance.

The struggles and uncertainty surrounding Lance’s performance have led to questions about his future with the team. While it remains unclear whether the 49ers will retain him or explore trade options, his current value is reportedly at an all-time low.

Injuries have plagued him throughout Lance first two seasons in the league, and his on-field efficiency in the limited games he played was less than stellar.
