In case you missed it, there’s a new goal-scoring king in the NHL. Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s record on Sunday, scoring his 895th goal against the New York Islanders on Sunday.
Hockey’s greatest individual record is now his, but he’s not interested in doing a press tour. Instead, Ovechkin is choosing to focus on the stretch run as the Caps look to win the Stanley Cup.
Ovechkin, the first-overall pick of the 2004 NHL Draft out of Russia, has been a superstar since he stepped on the ice in the 2005-2006 season. He might be the best pure shooter of the puck ever, and loves to operate from the face-off circle on the left wing. That’s exactly where he scored his record goal from. Take a look.

Obviously, Ovechkin is getting a ton of media requests, but he’s turning them down.
Great anecdote from @TedLeonsis on the show just now:
Ovi turned down the Tonight Show and other major national media opps since breaking the record so that he can lock in with his teammates for the playoff run that will be starting as soon as they're back on Thursday.

The Capitals currently had 107 points, most in the Eastern Conference, and are top-flight Stanley Cup contenders.Ovechkin has 42 goals on the season, an insane tally for a player that will turn 40 later this year.
