Alex Ovechkin is arguably the most popular Russian athlete in the world and a household name in the NHL. Having said that, people were eager to hear his opinion about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and on Friday he shared his thoughts on the matter.

Ovechkin made it clear that he doesn’t want to see any sort of war.

“It’s a hard situation. I have family back in Russia and it is scary moments,” Ovechkin said. “But we can’t do anything. We just hope it going to be end soon and everything is going to be all right.

“Please, no more war. It doesn’t matter who is in the war — Russia, Ukraine, different countries — I think we live in a world, like, we have to live in peace and a great world.”

Alex Ovechkin Won’t Criticize Vladimir Putin

While Ovi said that he’s against any sort of war, no matter what countries may be involved, he wouldn’t go as far as criticizing Russian president Vladimir Putin.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as Ovechkin has voiced his support for Putin in the past. His profile picture on Instagram is him giving the peace sign standing next to Putin.

The media did press Ovechkin to call out Putin, but he refused to go down that road.

“Well, he is my president. But how I said, I am not involved in politics,” Ovechkin explained.

“I am an athlete and you know, how I said, I hope everything is going to be done soon. It’s [a] hard situation right now for both sides and everything. Everything I hope is going to end. I’m not in control of the situation.”

Ovechkin is just the latest high-profile Russian athlete to condemn war. Tennis players Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev have also made it clear they want no war.
