Amare Patterson will not visit UNC because of Bill Belichick.
Amare Patterson is the highest rated football commit in North Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class. He’d planned to attend every home game before officially arriving to campus as a freshman. That will no longer be the case.
The Tar Heels have scratched all official visits for their game against East Tennessee State. They’ve been forced to ban all unofficial visits for the opening weekend by the NCAA.
Amare Patterson will have to wait three weeks longer to experience Kenan Stadium in 2026.
North Carolina can’t host football recruits.
The NCAA is punishing the program for past recruiting violations that occurred last year under Bill Belichick’s watch. More specifically, a photo session involving the head coach, recruits, and a school photographer before a game is believed to be reason for the ban.
The infraction was self-reported by the school. News broke on Wednesday that North Carolina would not be allowed to host unofficial visitors for its first home football game as a result.
The initial thought was that the punishment was tied to a current investigation into a potential athletic department scandal. That is not the case.
UNC provided clarity on the situation this afternoon. It is not allowed to host unofficial visitors. It is choosing not to host official visitors. It will concentrate on filling out its visitor lists for remaining home games.

According to Inside Carolina, Patterson was one of two visitors “penciled in” to make a trip to Chapel Hill this Saturday. After discussions with the staff, he will no longer see the game in-person, at least not as a recruit.
While assembling his fall travel schedule, four-star 2028 edge rusher Darias Johnson had penciled in UNC’s home opener this Saturday. But when he reached out to UNC to arrange the visit, assistant director of player personnel Andrew Blaylock told him the Tar Heels would not be hosting recruits Saturday.
UNC wide receiver commitment Amare Patterson had a similar experience when he contacted the Tar Heels’ recruiting staff earlier this week about visiting Saturday.
Patterson plans to attend each of UNC’s home games, but Johnson has already filled each of his remaining fall weekends with game trips elsewhere. As a result, rescheduling for another game at Kenan Stadium is unlikely. Instead, UNC has invited Johnson to attend Sunday’s practice.
Who is Amare Patterson?
The wide receiver is a South Carolina native that plays high school football at Bluffton. He boasts four-star status at 247 Sports, giving him the highest rating of any UNC commit in the ’27 cycle.
Patterson committed to the program in June over offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina. He has officially shut down his recruitment. The pass catcher is all Tar Heel.
He’d hoped to experience Kenan Stadium in-person for the home opener vs. ETSU. He has already made an official visit to Chapel Hill, meaning this next trip would’ve come in an unofficial capacity by rule.
Recruits can officially visit as many schools as their schedule allows, but they are still limited to one official per school, provided there is no head coaching change.
Thanks to Bill Belichick’s sideline photo op, unofficial visits are not permitted for the ETSU game. Patterson is effectively barred from attending the game as a prospect. He’s expected to be in town when North Carolina faces Notre Dame on October 3rd.
