The New York Jets have won a total of six games over the last two seasons and haven’t made the playoffs in over a decade. With that in mind, one would imagine it would be in the team’s best interest to sign any high-end player if the opportunity presented itself, but one former Jets scout doesn’t seem to think so.

Daniel Kelly used to work in the scouting department for the Jets, he’s evaluated his fair share of players over the years, and the latest player he’s taken a look at is Amari Cooper.

The Cowboys are expected to release Cooper and he’s being linked to a number of teams, including the Jets. Kelly, however, thinks New York should avoid signing Cooper at all costs.

“Watching Amari Cooper on game film in 2021 was like watching snow melt. He looked average in every sense of the word, and he looked like his best days are clearly behind him,” Kelly wrote at Jets Country.

Kelly went as far as to say that Cooper’s body language was an issue last season, which is just another reason New York should avoid him.

“Cooper’s body language on the field lacked energy and he gave off a vibe of being disgruntled.”

“While Cooper may have a quarter of a tank left for a contending team (I won’t recommend him), he is absolutely not a fit for this young Jets team. If his route running looked sluggish on playoff contending Dallas, I can not imagine what it would look on a team that is rebuilding. Cooper does not remotely fit the Jets from a chemistry standpoint.”

The Jets Need Playmakers

While Kelly knows much more about football than me and is entitled to his opinion, the Jets being nitpicky when it comes to acquiring playmakers seems like a bold move.

Cooper caught 68 passes for 865 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games a season ago in Dallas. He would have led every receiving category for the Jets last year by a wide margin.

Plugging a veteran wideout into your system, one being led by a young Zach Wilson, seems like a move worth pursuing.

Cooper is just three seasons removed from being a Pro Bowler and will turn just 28-years-old in June, that resume alone should have the Jets intrigued given their history.
