Andy Reid would be the first person to admit he has a penchant for unhealthy foods, and he apparently has an undying love for Haagen-Dazs to the point where it’s caused some drama during situations where he can’t get his hands on that particular brand of ice cream.

On Sunday, Andy Reid won his third Super Bowl as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, and there’s little doubt the legendary football mind who’s been patrolling the sidelines for various teams since the 1980s celebrated that victory with one of the cheeseburgers he’s incredibly fond of.

Of course, man cannot live on burgers alone, and Reid has plenty of options he can turn to when it comes to staying fueled over the course of the season. Based on what people who’ve worked with him have to say, he caps off every meal the night before a game with some ice cream—specifically Haagen-Dazs, which is apparently the only brand he’ll consume.

The quirk was at the center of an article from The Athletic that featured interviews with some coaches, players, and staffers who are very familiar with Reid’s Haagen-Dazs obsession, which apparently has the ability to be a point of contention when he ends up in a situation where he’s unable to get his fix in a timely manner.

One of his assistant coaches says the head of travel operations for the Chiefs is tasked with ensuring every hotel the team stays at during road trips is stocked with Haagen-Dazs, and Kansas City fullback Anthony Sherman recalled what transpired when Reid was able to determine it hadn’t been supplied just by glancing at the catering spread, saying:

“There was one time in Baltimore where for some reason they didn’t put it out right away. He came in and just looked at it and knew, right away, that it wasn’t Haagen-Dazs.

I looked at [travel ops head] Mitch Reynolds and said, ‘Dude, that’s not Haagen-Dazs.’ He goes, ‘No, it is, it is.’ I go, ‘I’m telling you right now, it’s not. Look at him.’ He was just staring at it.”

Retired punter Dustin Colquitt also painted a hilarious mental picture by recalling how Reid would react if he was deprived of his precious treat, adding:

“He would stand there with a spoon and a scooper waiting for them to go to change it to Haagen-Dazs or get a delivery of Haagen-Dazs.

He would not eat it if it was like Blue Bell or something. He would tell people, ‘You go ahead if you’re going to get it, but I’m waiting on ice cream. This isn’t ice cream.'”

Andy Reid is a treasure who must be protected at all costs.
