Angel Hernandez has made negative headlines throughout his career, often viewed as the MLB’s worst ump. This year, the numbers supported that notion.

Hernandez was the lowest rated umpire in Major League Baseball’s 2023 regular season.

According to the Umpire Auditor social media account, Hernandez received the worst grade of any blue that appeared in at least 10 games. Hernandez hit that 10-game mark on the dot, getting a late start in the ’23 season due to a back injury.

The account states that in those 10 games, Hernandez made 161 bad calls, or about 16 per game. That would come out to roughly two per inning. He also recorded the lowest rated game of the year for any umpire.

The post came accompanied by a video montage of a few of his worst calls.

It didn’t take long for those misses to roll in as he botched an easy safe/out call on a stolen base during his first game.

There was also an awful check swing call on Bryce Harper that led to an on-field explosion from the slugger, as well as a mind-blowing miss during a matchup between the Braves and Giants.

Fans weren’t surprised, but they were quick to respond to the statistic online.

“Hernandez is bad, and water is wet.”

“If I were that bad at my job, I would be fired.”

“Angel Hernandez is the absolute worst. He ought to be cut loose or sent to AAA to get better. He’s a liability that makes the whole profession look bad.”

“I’d get ejected every time he was behind the plate.”

“The balls for strikes are bad, but the strikes for balls are a war crime.”

The season is through, but his performance will live on thanks to this thread.
