SEC Coach Dismisses Proposed College Football ‘Super League’

It’s pretty obvious the college football landscape is in for a dramatic overhaul at some point in the near future, and it could possibly come in the form of a fairly revolutionary “Super League” that was proposed earlier this week. However, there’s at least one SEC program that doesn’t seem to think it has much potential.

The advent of the NIL Era sparked a domino effect that continues to be felt as schools around the country attempt to adjust to the new reality that set in virtually overnight while scrambling to ensure they’re not left in the dust as college football enters a new age.

The writing on the wall really started to appear in 2021 when Oklahoma and Texas revealed their intentions to leave the Big 12 in favor of the SEC. That led to a fairly seismic shift that resulted in the demise of the Pac-12, which was ultimately left with a whopping total of two members after the rest of the conference defected to the Big 12, Big 10, and ACC.

There’s little doubt we’ll be treated to more realignment over the next few years, and on Wednesday, The Athletic published an article examining a proposal being championed by a group called College Sports Tomorrow that’s proposed a “Super League” that would consist of the top 70 FBS teams grouped into seven divisions of 10 schools each along with an eighth that would bring the concept of relegation and promotion to college football.

That group asserts the teams that make the cut would be able to take advantage of the increased television revenue that would supposedly accompany that model, but according to Pete Nakos of On3, one head coach at a school in the SEC—which currently has the most leverage of any conference in the country—downplayed the push, saying, “It’s nothing. My AD told me that it’s DOA. There’s no way the SEC will go with the idea.”

There’s zero doubt the “Super League” is dead in the water if the SEC doesn’t feel like going along with its vision, so anyone who’s been intrigued by the concept may not want to get their hopes up based on that prediciton.
