Football coaches are usually very passionate about that particular pastime and tend to wear their emotions on their sleeves on the sideline. That can lead to some heated moments where they end up crossing the line, which is certainly the case with what recently unfolded at a high school game in Atlanta.
The primary job of a high school football coach is obviously leading the team on the gridiron, but people in that position also have an obligation to set a good example and serve as role models for the teenagers they’re tasked with overseeing.
In 2021, retired NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer found himself in hot water after he was captured ripping into one of his tight ends during a game where his team had a very sizeable lead. He eventually apologized for going too far, but the skipper was relatively restrained compared to a high school football coach who recently ended up in handcuffs for his actions.
On Saturday, Benjamin E. Mays High School faced off against Douglas County as part of a series of contests that were held at Eddie. S Henderson Stadium for the gathering dubbed the “Great Atlanta Bash.”
According to WMTV, Mays not only lost that game by a score of 48-42 but lost one of its coaches when everything was said and done after he was captured punching one of his own players in the stomach during a heated moment on the sideline.

The outlet reports the unnamed assistant coach (a “lay coach” who is not employed in any other capacity by the school) was detained by police who plan to charge him with simple battery over the blow.
A spokesperson for Atlanta Public Schools added the coach “faces administrative charges from the district as well” and has already been removed from his former position with the team.
