Auburn fans aren’t handling the team’s 31-10 loss to New Mexico State well. They’ve found an entertaining way to cope on social media.

Many on The Plains are now comparing Hugh Freeze to Nick Saban, who had an equally embarrassing upset during his first season in Tuscaloosa.

Rivalries are the best part of college football, and none are bigger than the Iron Bowl. Auburn and Alabama are always competing both on and off the field, and the two hate-fueled fanbases make it a point to jab the other side at every turn.

That can come either in the form of recent results or rehashing past lows of the opposite program.

You can bet Crimson Tide fans were letting the Tigers hear it after they were blown out as 26-point favorites by New Mexico State. Auburn paid NMSU nearly $2 million to come play at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Fans have found a way to cope with the loss, though, believing this to be a turning point in the team’s path to success.

Auburn fans compare Hugh Freeze to Nick Saban after NMSU loss.

Auburn is going through a bit of a rut at the moment, working on their third head coach in four years.

While the team has done some nice things in Year 1 for Hugh Freeze, it makes it more difficult to be patient when your archrival is on top of the college football world.

Alabama is still playing for a national championship this year while the Tigers are simply hoping to improve their bowl game destination. That took a major hit following Saturday’s loss to the Aggies.

But maybe there’s a silver lining?

Auburn fans are saying so as they come to terms with the embarrassing defeat, referencing a similar loss for the Alabama program in Nick Saban’s first season.

During the 2007 campaign, the Crimson Tide lost to Louisiana-Monroe on their home field a week before the Iron Bowl. Alabama held the same 6-5 record following that loss but was able to turn things around quickly.

The Tide won 12 games the next year and played in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama has won 10 games or more every year since.

Auburn fans are praying the same happens with the Tigers. Speak it into existence!

We’ll see if Auburn goes on an Alabama-like run in the coming years.
