Emily Mayfield, the wife of former Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield, as seemingly reacted to her husband’s latest career move on social media as the 31-year-old has made her previously public Instagram, which boasts over 223,000 followers, private.
On Monday morning, the Carolina Panthers released Baker Mayfield despite the fact that they traded for him back in July. During the 2022 season, Mayfield started just six games and composed a 1-5 record. Across seven total appearances, Mayfield completed 57% of his passes for 1,313 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions. The former Heisman Trophy winner also had six fumbles (and lost one).
Drafted by the Browns with the #1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield was jettisoned out of Cleveland after the team traded for controversial signal-caller Deshaun Watson, who actually made his first start for the team over the weekend following an 11-game suspension. Over the course of his five-year career so far, Mayfield has compiled a 30-35 record while completing 61% of his passes for 15,438 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 62 interceptions.
Given the recent season-ending injury to 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (who was already filling in for the injured Trey Lance), some NFL fans have speculated that the former Oklahoma Sooner gunslinger could wind up in the Bay Area as Kyle Shanahan’s team desperately tries to salvage their season. The Niners, though, have the 24th waiver priority, which means 23 other teams will have a chance to snag him before they do.
Wherever Mayfield does wind up, it will surely be his last chance to prove himself as a legitimate NFL starting quarterback, otherwise the 27-year-old likely faces a future of being a career-long backup from here on out.
