Basic Academy was suddenly removed from the high school baseball playoffs in Nevada just a few hours before the postseason was set to begin. Nobody knows why.
The NIAA has not revealed the reason for this decision.
Although the state is prepared to move forward with the high school baseball playoffs without the Wolves, the players and parents are calling for a pause. They demand a complete and proper review.
Basic Academy is a powerhouse.
Technically speaking, Basic is not located in Las Vegas. It is actually located in Henderson, approximately 15 miles southeast of the city.
Established in 1942, the public high school enrolls ~2,500 students in Grades 9-12. The Wolves play on the Class 5A level of competition in the Southern League. They are dominant in high school baseball.
Basic has not finished worse than No. 7 in the state since 2000. It went 31-10 in 2022, 25-9 in 2023, 20-8 in 2024, and 25-7 in 2025. The Wolves won the 5A state championship last season to finish as the top-ranked team in Nevada. They were well positioned to repeat this season.
Head coach Anthony Neves led his team to an undefeated record in league play and an overall record of 18-8. Basic earned the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A Southern League playoffs for the second year in a row.
The high school baseball playoffs got underway in Nevada on Wednesday evening. The Wolves were supposed to begin their postseason campaign on Thursday afternoon.
The Wolves were suddenly removed from the Nevada high school baseball playoffs.
Basic had its name removed from the NIAA bracket just a few hours before first pitch against Faith Lutheran in a Southern Region winners bracket second-round contest at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Neither the Academy, nor the school district, nor the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association said why.
Faith Lutheran advanced to play Centennial in the third round of the winners bracket on Saturday even though it did not play its second round game. Coronado advanced to an elimination game in the losers bracket without having to play the loser of Faith Lutheran and Basic Academy.
As you could imagine, the players and their parents are furious.
Ashley Sisolak serves as the legal counsel for players and parents. She issued the following statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“The players and families of the Basic Academy varsity baseball team are outraged by the unjust decision to disqualify the team from state playoffs on the very day of competition begins. This action was taken without notice, without any opportunity to respond, and without a fair investigation. It punishes an entire team of student athletes — kids who did nothing wrong — for an alleged issue involving a single player. This is fundamentally unfair.”
She claims the Wolves were not treated properly by the NIAA.
“We respect the role of the NIAA and CCSD but fairness and due process are not optional. When decisions carry consequences this severe, they must be made carefully and transparently — not rushed at the last minute.”
Although the postseason is currently set to continue without Basic, the players and parents are hopeful for a pause. They want the opportunity to be reinstated after a proper investigation, or at the very least, clarity on the decision.
“We are calling for an immediate pause of the playoffs to allow for a proper, fair review. These athletes earned their place on the field. They deserve the chance to complete — and to be treated justly. It is the failure of the adults in the situation that have caused this injustice.”
Interestingly enough, this is the second time in three years where this has happened. Basic Academy also missed the high school baseball playoffs in 2024 due to an undisclosed rule violation.
It is unclear as to whether the current situation resembles the past or if the sudden removal in 2026 stems from something completely different. Nobody knows.
