Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow already established himself as one of the biggest stars in the league. He has taken Cincinnati to the AFC Championship in back to back season as well as a Super Bowl appearance. With his rookie contract getting closer to the end, the team has already started talking about an extension for their top-tier passer.

Once a young star player comes off his rookie deal to sign his second contract, especially a quarterback, his team can’t keep the same level of talent around him because he takes a lot more of the of the cap space they have. That’s what separates top front offices in the league with bad ones, the ability to keep as much talent as possible once the franchise quarterback makes top 5 contract money.

During an appearance on NFL Network, Bengals All-Star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase said he thinks Joe Burrow will look to sign a team-friendly type deal to keep the talent around him.

“At the end of the day, I don’t think Joe’s really too worried about how much money he’s gonna make because he’s already making a tremendous amount,”, Chase admitted, “It’ll work out for itself, it will all work out. I think Joe knows what he wants and how he wants to set up his contract to keep some of his weapons around him. And I think that’s the biggest part for him.”

The Bengals have key players from Burrow’s own 2020 Draft Class that he knows will need to get paid. Wide Receiver Tee Higgins and Linebacker Logan Wilson are two of those players. Ja’Marr Chase, from the 2021 class, is another.

The best quarterback in history, Tom Brady, is notorious as the rare player that would take less money in order to allow his teammates to earn more and stay around. Will Joe Burrow follow that GOAT’s example?
