The Tampa Bay Lightning murdered the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. The Bolts scored just 45 seconds into the game. I happened to be sitting in Row S, Seat 6 (Sec 114) at a 90-degree angle to the Isles net and got a bird’s eye view of the action. It was my first Lightning game in person in what felt like forever and HOT DAMN was it a good one.

Actually, the last Lightning game I was meant to go to was on March 12th, 2020 the day the NHL hit the pause button and indefinitely postponed the league. I was supposed to watch my Bolts play the Flyers that night until the world stopped. I didn’t make it to any regular season games this year but the Lightning met all of my wildest expectations and then some last night.

The Islanders lost 8-0 on the road. They racked up over two periods’ worth of penalty minutes. Barzal was given a 5-minute and tossed from the game. The Tampa Bay lightning kept scoring. The 8-0 win was the widest win margin in a Stanley Cup Semifinals/Finals since 1985. And fans went ham with the memes and stats.

I figured I’d put together some tweets and stats from the Lightning’s 8-0 that perfectly sum up just how much of a battering the game was. The scoring was early and often. At one point the Bolts were on pace to score 10 goals. Here are some of the best memes (and stats below):

Some incredible stats from the game and these playoffs run by the Tampa Bay Lightning:

Brayden Point is setting records, Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman are getting hot, nobody can score on Vasy, Killorn is going OFF during this run. After the 8-0 win, Tampa Bay Lightning players hold the top five spots on the Points Leaders list for the Stanley Cup Playoffs (Kucherov 27, Point 18, Stamkos 17, Hedman and Kollorn 16).

The Tampa Bay Lightning haven’t won anything yet, as far as I’m concerned. They’re reigning champs but that was last year. They haven’t even closed out this series and winning at Nassau during the playoffs is a tall task…for anyone other than the Lightning who have only lost once there in the Playoffs.

There’s a 90% chance I’ll be back in this same seat if the Lightning are forced to play a game 7, wearing the same outfit, drinking the same beers, getting there just as early, eating the same concessions food. Hockey’s funny like that.

If there’s no Game 7 then I’m damn sure going to be back in those seats for the Finals.

For what it’s worth, the Tampa Bay Lightning put up 8 goals on the Islanders in Game 1 of their 2020 series and the Isles came fighting back in Game 2. It took magic from Kucherov in the final seconds of that game for the Lightning to win. So the Islanders have proven they can block out the past and move onto the next game. Game 6 should be epic.
