Looking back at the 10 best college football uniforms from Week 6.
Week 6 of the college football season brought about a number of high-powered clashes between heavyweight foes, headlined by an SEC battle between Georgia and Alabama. There was drama. There were fireworks. Make sure to check out our recap of viral moments from the weekend in order to relive each play.
The weekend also provided viewers with fresh new design looks in terms of college football uniforms. Schools did their best to impress by rolling out alternative threads and throwback logos. Some did it better than others.
Here, I’ve gathered my 10 favorite uniforms from Week 6. I’ve also listed the three worst. You may disagree. If so, be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
10 best college football uniforms from Week 6.
There is no bias in these rankings, though I certainly have my own personal preferences. With that said, if your team did not make this list, it did not win the week in fashion unless I’m otherwise convinced.
I’ll run through the top 10 designs before closing with my least favorite looks. Let’s start with a blue blood that strayed from a traditional theme.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame relied on the ‘Luck of the Irish’ with all-green shamrock fits for a game vs. Stanford. It didn’t need much luck in a 58-7 blowout.
The Fighting Irish looked good while dismantling the Cardinal. It’s a design the school pulls out once a year. Not only was the color combo different, but so was the logo. Notre Dame’s uniforms featured a leprechaun running with a football.
What didn’t change was the classic gold domes. This look was arguably the best of the weekend.
Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky threw it back to the ‘Power K’ with retro fits for a matchup vs. LSU. They shined while pulling the upset in Lexington.
The uniforms were minimalistic but made a statement. I also liked the ‘Cats on the sleeve, and the blue and white color combo needs no changing.
The Wildcats won on a two-point play in overtime to beat the Tigers 35-34. It was the second straight week with that exact outcome. Kentucky is now 4-1 and a threat in the SEC.
Florida Gators
Florida activated retro mode for an SEC showdown with South Carolina. It honored former player, coach, and Heisman winner Steve Spurrier before kickoff.
Unfortunately, the game didn’t go as planned with the Gators losing 38-19. It did not take away from the threads.
The 1966 logo was seen on the helmets. The Gators went all-white despite playing at home. It made the blue and orange striping pop. This was definitely one of the top throwback looks of the week.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets unveiled a new helmet logo for an ACC battle vs. Duke. The lids featured the “Ramblin’ Wreck” 1930 Ford Model A Sport Coupe that leads the team onto the field each game.
That replaced the typical block ‘GT.’ The team also went with white uniforms at home, which Duke combatted with all-blacks.
On the field, Georgia Tech pulled a 28-25 upset. That’s 1-0 for the new lids!
West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia has been featured a few times on my lists, and they didn’t disappoint in Week 6. The Mountaineers kept the momentum going with all-black uniforms for a college football matchup vs. Arizona.
The coal-inspired outfits paid homage to the state’s mining roots. They were a perfect representation of Morgantown.
Unfortunately, the Mountaineers failed to honor its history with a win. West Virginia was beaten soundly by the next team on this list.
Arizona Wildcats
Arizona contrasted West Virginia’s all-black look with a white and red color combo. They also featured one of the sport’s best logos on the lids.
Rather than the block ‘A,’ the decal read, “Arizona” with cacti and a setting sun in the background. It’s an old look straight out of the 90s. Hopefully, it’s here to stay.
The Wildcats dominated West Virginia on the field, picking up a 52-31 win on the road.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon was inspired by speed in Week 6, going with an “Origin of Speed” design vs. UCLA. It paid homage to the school’s Hayward Field, which was once the home of the football team. It’s now the home of Oregon’s track and field program.
There were subtle details in these fits that made them shine. The kinetic wing that runs on the side panel of the uniform’s pants plus the helmet and shoulders was set at a 26.2-degree angle, referencing the number of miles in a marathon. The ‘O’ logo was designed to resemble track lanes.
The bright green popped on the black background. It was the Ducks, though, that got popped on the field. UCLA picked up a 17-15 win in controversial fashion.
Florida State Seminoles
This was my favorite uniform game of the weekend. Florida State went icy white to combat Louisville’s all-black getups on Friday night. They did not disappoint.
The colors and logos shined through on the background. There are few better decals than the FSU spear on the domes. I’d give them a 10 out of 10. There are no critiques.
The ‘Noles did not play nearly as good as they looked. They fell by 24 points to their ACC rivals in Kentucky.
Louisville Cardinals
Speaking of the Cardinals, they knocked it out of the park with a blackout theme for Friday Night Lights. They also threw it back with a retro helmet logo.
The traditional decal was replaced by a Cardinal racing towards the endzone with the football. I can’t explain it, but it gave me high school pep rally vibes in the best possible way, which was fitting for a Friday night.
Louisville dominated the game to pick up a 44-20 home win. I’d like to see the logo featured again this year.
Pitt Panthers
This is hands-down my favorite throwback look of the weekend, and maybe the season. Nothing beats the blue and yellow.
In the not-so-distant past, Pitt wore dark navy and gold. It was a look made famous by Larry Fitzgerald, LeSean McCoy, and Aaron Donald. This season, they will recognize program stars from further back. The Panthers are honoring the 1976 national championship team all year. The uniforms reflect it.
These truly are perfection, from the coloring to the number design to logo on the collar. Simple, yet effective. Even the staff had a throwback theme with old-school helmets stitched onto their apparel.
Pitt fell to North Carolina, 21-17. It does not make these uniforms any less impressive.
The worst college football uniforms from Week 6.
These, for one reason or another, just didn’t hit. It could be color combo. It could be logos and designs. Simply put, they missed the mark. I’ll start with the most egregious.
FIU Panthers
Florida International rocked pink “Miami Vice” themed fits for a matchup vs. New Mexico State. I understand the thought process, but they are hideous. There’s no way around it.
The Panthers have worn these before, typically pulling them out once a season for a home contest. I won’t push for the school to retire the jerseys, but they hurt my eyes.
New Mexico State might’ve felt that pain, too. FIU won big, 22-3, to capture its third win of the year.
Utah Utes
I love all-white uniforms. There is no cleaner look than icy. And in all honesty, Utah would be on the flip side of this list had it not been for one detail.
The helmet logos were atrocious. They dove too far into the “Freeze Warning” theme. They looked like something you’d see on a spray-painted t-shirt purchased at the local fair. Just bad.
Outside of the decals, the uniforms were nice. I love the color combo. I love the striping. The logo just didn’t fit.
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas was Utah’s foe on Saturday, making this the worst uniform game of the week. The Jayhawks combatted the Utes’ all-white look with a blackout. Again, I respect the all-blacks. It’s intimidating when done correctly. But like its opponent, Kansas missed on the logo.
A massive Jayhawk head was plastered on the lids. They’ve worn them before but on a white background. The color change doesn’t make them any more aesthetically pleasing.
I much prefer the full body mascot, or even the block ‘KU.’ I also think the blue, red, and yellow clash with the black backdrop. There was just too much going on. Let’s get back to the traditional blues for Homecoming in a couple of weeks.
