The New England Patriots earned a big win on Sunday as the team defeated the Cleveland Browns convincingly. However, many were perplexed by head coach Bill Belichick denying a muffed punt ball by rookie Brenden Schooler. Now, we finally know the real reason why Belichick didn’t want the ball.

The Real Reason Bill Belichick Denied Muffed Punt Ball From Rookie

According to Jason McCourty on Good Morning Football, it all turned out to be a prank on Brenden Schooler. Apparently, a Patriots coach informed Schooler to give the ball to Bill Belichick as a joke. The undrafted rookie took it seriously and followed through with it.

What an odd prank that provided hilarious results. It was rather confusing seeing it play out live. The muffed punt secured the win for New England and many believed Schooler was giving the ball to Belichick as a way to celebrate him tying George Halas in wins. Instead, the Patriots’ head coach had no idea of the joke and it led to a hilarious moment.

It’s unclear which coach pranked the undrafted rookie. Either way, Schooler is not likely going to believe that coach anytime soon. We’re just glad Bill Belichick wasn’t upset or anything and everyone is on good terms. You never quite know what’s on Belichick’s mind.

Look for the Patriots to potentially get over .500 in Week 7 as they take on the Chicago Bears.
