Kansas Basketball Coach Bill Self Draws Technical Foul For Explicit Angry Meltdown Toward Referees

Bill Self

Bill Self did not agree with a foul call during the first half of Saturday’s college basketball game between Kansas and Iowa State. Irate would be an understatement…

The 61-year-old proceeded to lose his mind on the Big 12 officiating crew and picked up a technical foul as result of his profanity-laced meltdown. CBS cut to the sideline as Self went ballistic.

It was not hard to read his lips. He said, “OH MY F—— GOD, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!”

Meanwhile, Cyclones fans were having a blast in the crowd while the visiting head coach turned bright red with rage. The vibes in Ames were tremendous!

Self’s anger stemmed from a Flagrant One that was called on his star forward, Parker Braun. The 6-foot-10, 235-pound sixth-year senior ran back on defense to try and stop Iowa State’s fastbreak.

His effort to stop the shot resulted in contact with the shooter’s head. He did not do a very good job of going for the ball.

Although it is impossible to argue that Braun did not commit a foul, there is some debate about whether his poor defensive effort deserved to be uncharged to a Flagrant One— which must involve “excessive or severe contact during a live ball.” The referees probably made the right call.

Braun tried to prevent the easy two by throwing himself at the shooter without trying to go for the ball. His focus was on stopping the shot, not blocking the shot, per say.

Kansas fans disagreed and there is a case to be made that Braun’s contact was not excessive or severe. Self clearly did not think so!

He could not control his temper and picked up a technical foul of his own. Big 12 officials were not interested in Self’s shenanigans and shut it down!
