4 Years Later, Brent Musburger Still Doesn’t Get The Fuss Over His Infamous Katherine Webb Comments
The date: January 7, 2013. The place: Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The event: The 2013 BCS National Championship Game. That’s when and where sports broadcaster extraordinaire Brent Musburger made Miss Alabama USA 2012 Katherine Webb a household name.
Webb, the then girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, was on hand at the game to watch her boyfriend lead his Crimson Tide to a rousing 42 to 14 whipping of No. 1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish en route to his second straight BCS championship.
However, it wasn’t McCarron or Alabama’s performance that day that set the internet ablaze that night. It was Musburger’s comments about Webb that sent social media into a tizzy.
In a recent interview with SEC Country Musburger explained what was going through his head at the time as well as afterwards…
“I wish them the best,” Musburger said. “And AJ, I’m glad that they’re happily married. I hope they live happily ever after. … Katherine remains beautiful, in my opinion.”
Musburger said the national reaction to his comments about Webb, a former Miss Alabama, surprised him. Webb, for her part, wished Musburger well after the announcer’s retirement announcement in January.
“I called a beauty queen beautiful,” Musburger said. “Give me a break. I mean, come on. That was like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
She really did thank him, by the way…
Musburger also caught some heat that game when he told his broadcast partner Kirk Herbstreit, “you quarterbacks get all the good-looking women.”
“I had just been out to dinner with Herbstreit and his wife the night before,” Musburger said. “So the rest of the comments were addressed to him. … I thought it was silly, to tell you the truth.”
We couldn’t agree more, Brent.
Oh yeah, in case you’ve been living under a rock, as Musburger mentioned, McCarron and Webb ended up getting married and having a child together. And guess what? She’s still beautiful.
