It’s been over nine months since Brittney Griner was arrested by Russian authorities who discovered weed oil in her luggage in March. That marked the start of a harrowing saga, as the WNBA star was eventually sentenced to nine years in a penal colony where she was held until she finally headed back home on Thursday after the United States announced it had agreed to a prisoner swap involving a notorious arms dealer.

Griner ultimately earned her freedom thanks to the officials who spent months engaging in behind-the-scenes negotiations, but she also had a number of high-profile (and somewhat unlikely) advocates in her corner who pushed for her release while incarcerated.

That includes Dennis Rodman, who attempted to fly to Russia to negotiate before acquiescing to the professionals who advised him to take a backseat. Justin Bieber was slightly less active, but he nonetheless inquired about ways he might be able to come to Griner’s assistance over the summer.

There was also Vin Diesel, who called attention to the situation in a now-deleted Instagram post where he stated “I need Brittney Griner home before Christmas.”

It didn’t take long for people to realize the actor’s holiday wish had come true after learning about Griner’s release, and the fact that she’s heading home safe makes it much easier to laugh at the deluge of jokes and memes concerning the man who seemingly played no role in her release but who is still getting plenty of credit online.
