San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy ‘Exposed’ After Terrible Performance Vs Browns

Coming into their week 6 game against the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was getting major MVP buzz after a red-hot start for both the 49ers and himself. But, Sunday did not go his way, and now many are saying that Purdy was “exposed” following a poor performance.

It was simply not Brock Purdy’s day. A great Browns defense coupled with poor weather conditions and some costly injuries to his weapons all hampered Purdy significantly.

But, plenty of quarterbacks face those same obstacles each week and still get it done. Brock Purdy did not, going just 12/27 for 125 yards and a touchdown to go with an interception. That interception total probably should have been higher, as seemingly a half-dozen throws looked like they could be intercepted, only for Cleveland not to capitalize.

It was a stunning performance for Purdy, who coming into the game had thrown for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions while completing over 70% of his passes.

Things had looked so easy for the second-year player, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but claimed the 49ers starting job midway through last season after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Sunday was the first game that he had started and finished in his career in which the San Francisco 49ers didn’t win.

Injuries to two of his top weapons, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, definitely were factors. But, as many of his critics have pointed out during his hot start, no one had as many advantages at the quarterback position in terms of the situation around him as Brock Purdy did. When some of those advantages were removed on Sunday, he all of a sudden looked like someone who is a borderline starter, not an MVP candidate.

Many are rejoicing, saying that he has been exposed as an NFL starting quarterback.

I’m not willing to say he’s been ‘exposed’. But, some of his limitations definitely showed today. He will have an extra day to get it right, as Brock Purdy and his teammates will take on the Vikings on Monday Night Football next week.
