When Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an injury back in Week 13, fans immediately began to worry about the San Francisco 49ers’ playoff hopes.

The team was fighting for 1st place in the NFC West and was suddenly turning the ball over to their 3rd string quarterback.

It has turned out that the 49ers had nothing to worry about.

Brock Purdy has shocked the football world and led the 49ers to 5 consecutive since taking over at quarterback.

His performances over the past few weeks have some fans wondering how he ended up being the last pick in the NFL Draft just 8 months ago.

Yesterday, Purdy appeared on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” and revealed that he wasn’t actually all that surprised to be “Mr Irrelevant.”

You look at the last two years of my film in college and everything like that, [and] there’s some parts of my game where, yeah, I had to work and improve on. I’m honest and open about that with myself. But there’s always this part of me where I’ve been like when I’m playing my best football, I know I can play at the next level and take a team down the field and be the guy on the team to help us win and put points up on the board.

So, I’ve always believed in myself, but there were areas of my game that I had to clean up, so that’s something I’m not secretive about or anything. I’m open about it, I’m real with myself.

There were definitely some questions about Purdy heading into the draft. He did not have the most impressive last couple of years at Iowa State.

He threw for just 19 touchdowns in each of those seasons and the offense leaned heavily on Breece Hall.

He has clearly made major improvements in his first year in the NFL and looks like he’s going to make a lot of teams regret not taking a chance on him late in the draft.
