Earlier reports indicated that Trey Lance is receiving all of the first team reps for the San Francisco 49ers right now.
Meanwhile, Sam Darnold is taking his reps with the second unit all while Brock Purdy continues to recover from his elbow injury.
Many were excited about Lance being given first team reps. However, general manager John Lynch continues to speak incredibly highly of Purdy in his latest comments.
According to Pro Football Talk, Lynch loves what he’s seeing from Brock Purdy so far.
He claims, “He’s had one [throwing] session thus far and we’re incredibly encouraged by that. He’s hitting all his marks and that doesn’t surprise us, because he’s putting in all the work.”
Lynch continues by stating, “As for best-case scenario, we’ll take it as it comes. The hope is he’s ready for training camp. The hope is he’s ready for the regular season.”
Based on those comments, it sure sounds like the 49ers can’t wait to have Brock Purdy back to full health.
Even so, many sports fans are still holding out hope that Trey Lance will be the starting quarterback in San Francisco.
But the 49ers have continuously hyped up Brock Purdy time and time again. To the point where it’s starting to come off like the organization is rooting for Purdy over Lance.
Additionally, John Lynch makes it clear that the franchise is not going to rush Purdy back onto the field, per Pro Football Talk.
“We feel good about that position holistically. We are not going to put Brock in a situation where he’s not fully healed. That means not just get back, but get back and get in reps under your belt.”
In the end, San Francisco feels comfortable about their quarterback situation. And why wouldn’t they? Purdy is turning out to be a pleasant surprise, Lance still holds value as a young prospect, and Darnold is a solid backup option for both of them.
However, the quarterback controversy remains, despite the fact the 49ers continue to hint toward Brock Purdy being the favorite to being the starting option in the 2023 season.
That all depends on how he recovers from his injury though. And from the sounds of it, the 49ers are happy with his recovery process.
