One of these days, Cam Newton will likely have his No. 1 retired by the Carolina Panthers.

Newton, who was selected No. 1 overall in 2011 NFL Draft, made three Pro Bowls, won an NFL MVP and led the Panthers to the 2016 Super Bowl all while wearing the famed No. 1.

But in an alternate universe, that’s never his number at all.

Those who recall Newton’s incredible college career with the Auburn Tigers will remember that he wore No. 2 while leading to the 2011 BCS National Championship.

As it turns out, Newton wanted to continue to wear No. 2 in the NFL. And he would have done so, if not for the insane price quoted to him by teammate Jimmy Clausen, who was wearing the number at the time.

Clausen, who the Panthers drafted in the second round just one year prior, was already wearing No. 2. But after a 1-9 record in 10 starts as a rookie, it seemed clear his days as Carolina’s starter were numbered

As Newton tells it, he “didn’t even want number one.”

“Man, Jimmy Clausen…he was like ‘if you want it, you gotta pay for it,'” Newton said. “I was like ‘cool, how much?’ He said ‘A million.’ I said ‘boy, kiss my a–. A million dollars, bro? Bro, people don’t make a million dollars in a lifetime. Let alone I’m gonna give you a million dollars just for f—— number.’

“So I thought he was playing. The mother f—– comes back and says ‘okay, bro, I talked to my people. We’ll do it for $750,000.’ I said ‘Oh you(‘re) for real?’ I hung that phone up. I called the equipment and (told him) I’m rocking with No. 1.”

Clausen then served as Newton’s backup until 2013 when he was waived by the team. He lasted just two more seasons in the NFL.

So it’s hard to blame him for trying to secure the bag.

But it may have changed the Panthers’ franchise history forever.
