FIFA held its first-ever World Cup match on Canadian soil on Friday afternoon as Canada played host to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The local soccer fans unleashed a loud boo toward the United States when its flag was introduced during the prematch ceremony.
They quickly fell silent when Michael Bublé walked out onto the pitch.
It will be interesting to see whether U.S. soccer fans flip the script during its opening match. I don’t know if Canada lives rent-free in the heads of the Americans the way America does for Canadians.
Canada went crazy for the World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place at 16 host venues across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The first two matches of the tournament took place in Mexico on Thursday. Canada kicked things off on Friday.
Credit where credit is due, a sea of red made for an incredible scene as fans marched toward the stadium in Toronto.

Beautiful scenes as fans chant and cheer and high five fans who are lining the streets.
It’s going to be electric inside the stadium today. pic.twitter.com/PUg96LzLYn
It does not get more Canadian than this guy:
We’ve reached peak Canadiana here at the March to the Match and arrived at Princes’ Gate near the stadium.

A man wearing a cowboy hat, fur coat, carrying a Tim Hortons whips everyone into a frenzy as they finish singing O Canada.

Although the crowd was split ~70/30 in favor of the home country, the Bosnian supporters showed up in great force.

Both groups showed the utmost respect toward one another during the pregame festivities. It was a day that was largely rooted in friendship, sportsmanship and excitement for the game of soccer.
A really nice moment here.

Unfortunately, the Canadian fans did not keep that same energy for the United States. They did not give a warm reception.
Canadian soccer fans booed the American flag.
Every country represented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was introduced prior to the first match at Toronto Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Only the American flag was met with boos.
Canadian soccer fans loudly jeered the United States when it was announced.

Even Mexico received a loud cheer at the Fan Fest in Vancouver. The USA did not.

This should not come as a huge surprise. We have seen the Canadians boo a 15-year-old girl who sang the Star Spangled Banner. They do not care who or what it is. They are going to boo.
