Central Oklahoma head coach Adam Dorrel was forcibly restrained after the college football game against Central Missouri. He charged at a referee after the clock hit zero.
Fortunately, the situation did not get violent.
Unfortunately, behavior will likely warrant a public reprimand and/or a suspension from the league. A college football coach cannot act out in such a manner without facing repercussions.
Central Missouri won the college football game.
Saturday’s game between Central Missouri and Central Oklahoma had huge implications for the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Conference on the Division II level of NCAA competition. The Mules were ranked No. 21 in the country at 3-1. The Bronchos (with an H!) entered at 2-2. These two programs have great familiarity with one another.
Central Oklahoma head coach Adam Dorrel previously served as the head coach at Abilene Christian. Central Missouri head coach Josh Lamberson served as his offensive coordinator. They both were hired to their current roles in 2022.
Lamberson won a conference championship in 2023. Dorrel won a conference championship in 2024.
It was a back-and-forth matchup that went down to the wire. The Bronchos jumped out to a 17-6 lead with 10 minutes left in the second quarter before the momentum started to swing the other way. The Mules responded with a touchdown right before halftime to cut the score to 17-13. They went up 27-17 with 13:42 left in the fourth quarter.
Down by three scores, Central Oklahoma battled back. It actually took the lead, 31-30, with just over three minutes remaining.
Central Missouri took over on offense at its own 15-yard-line. The Mules drove 84 yards on 12 plays to set up first-and-goal from the one-yard-line. They ran for no gain on first and second down. Their pass fell incomplete on third down.
Out came the kicker. Colton Brunke Brown tried a 19-yard field goal to win the game. His kick was blocked… right between the uprights for three points. Central Missouri went ahead 33-31 with seven seconds left in the game.
The Bronchos attempted a later play as time expired. They did not reach the end zone and lost by two.
Central Oklahoma head coach Adam Dorrel charged at a referee.
The loss did not sit well with Adam Dorrel. He was especially frustrated with the officials. Even though the amount of penalties called were even, Central Oklahoma totaled greater penalty yardage in crucial situations. Its head coach was furious.
The 51-year-old charged at head referee Craig Helser while Central Missouri celebrated the win around him. A pair of assistant coaches ran over to stop him. They could not hold him back. He continued to charge at the official.
At that point, Lamberson ran over to Dorrel to try and calm him down. Cooler heads finally prevailed when group of police officers eventually made their way to the field to deescalate the situation.

As far as I can tell, Dorrel did not address the incident after the game. Nor did the university. Everybody moved on and the handshake line continued without issue. However, the MIAA will review what happened and issue a punishment in the coming days.
