Chargers general manager Tom Telesco publicly acknowledged the team’s costly mistake in signing cornerback J.C. Jackson to a $82.5 million deal.

Jackson’s stint with the Chargers was a short-lived and expensive affair, with the cornerback playing only seven games while pocketing $38 million for a little over a year on the team. Eventually, the Chargers traded him back to the Patriots earlier this season for a late round swap.

Telesco opened up to the team in a recent defensive backs meeting, where he stood before the group and issued an apology for the failed signing.

Telesco admitted to making a mistake with the signing, and apologized for continuing to give Jackson chances after he showed lack of commitment considering he was one of the highest paid players on the team. Telesco referred to the signing as a “swing and a miss.”

While Telesco’s apology may have come as a surprise, it was no secret within the organization that Jackson struggled to live up to expectations during his tenure with the Chargers. He faced injury issues and poor play, and was even benched in his final two games with the team.

Since rejoining the Patriots, Jackson has played in five games, showing signs of improvement with three passes defended and 14 tackles.

Tom Telesco will probably be more careful next time when giving away such big contracts.
