Charlie McAvoy won’t be suiting up for Team USA when they face off against Canada in Thursday night’s 4 Nations championship. However, he’ll be in the building to watch them play after harnessing “Free Bird” to reveal he’s been discharged from the hospital where he was being treated for an injury he suffered during the tournament.

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was expected to be a key difference maker for Team USA in the 4 Nations tournament, as the 27-year-old Long Island native was teamed up alongside Zach Werenski to create the squad’s top pair heading into the affair the NHL wisely replaced the All-Star Game with for the first time this season.

McAvoy didn’t show up on the score sheet when the United States faced off against Finland and Canada when the event got underway in Montreal, but he did have five hits in that second contest—including a big one on Connor McDavid that set the Americans up for the goal that tied things up in the first period of their 3-1 win on Saturday.

Unfortunately, that ended up being the last game McAvoy played, as he seemingly injured his shoulder in the third period of the Finland game before the Bruins announced he’d been admitted to Mass General on Tuesday to get treatment for an infection likely stemming from an injection he received to treat the ailment (there’s been some drama brewing behind the scenes due to Boston’s supposed belief Team USA’s medical staff—which is comprised of physicians who normally work for the Wild—provided him with inadequate care).

McAvoy was subsequently ruled out for the championship game, and there’s still no telling when he’ll be healthy enough to suit up for the Bruins.

However, we were treated to a positive update on Thursday when McAvoy revealed he’d been discharged from the hospital by posting a picture that showed him blasting “Free Bird” (the iconic Lynard Skynard tune Team USA has adopted as its goal song) in his car while driving near TD Garden.

You love to see it.
