Many brands and organizations go out of their way to celebrate Mother’s Day on social media. That includes USA Hockey, which had to do a little bit of damage control after getting called out by Charlie McAvoy’s sister in a post that implied she was a different member of his family.
Sunday was Mother’s Day, and if you only realized that was the case after reading the start of this sentence, I would like to extend my condolences for the awkward conversation you’re probably going to have the next time you talk to your mom.
Plenty of people who were aware of the annual celebration decided to mark it by celebrating their mother in a post on social media, which was also the case with many people who get paid to manage accounts for major companies and organizations.
USA Hockey was one of the brands that got in on the action, but there was a fairly glaring issue with a post that featured Charlie McAvoy.

Charlie McAvoy’s family tends to be a fairly frequent topic of conversation on the broadcast when he’s playing a game. The Bruins defenseman is married to the daughter of current Rangers coach Mike Sullivan, and his sister Kayla works as a strength and conditioning coach for the same franchise.
One of his other sisters, Holly, headed to Italy with his mom, dad, and a few other family members to watch him play for Team USA at the Winter Olympics, and she and her brother got to celebrate together in the stands after he and the rest of the squad earned a gold medal with their thrilling victory over Canada.
On Sunday, that picture was featured in the social media post that USA Hockey threw up in honor of Mother’s Day.

However, it was removed from the one that made it onto the organization’s Instagram after she hopped into the comments to let them know she is not, in fact, her older brother’s mom.
