Sunday’s NFL Divisional Round finale was one for the ages, but in a lot of ways, it came down to a coin toss. After scoring 47 points in the first 58 minutes of a back-and-forth game between the Bills and Chiefs, both teams scored 25 combined points in the final two minutes.

It was exhilarating.

After the figurative fireworks, the game went to overtime tied at 36. However, because of the NFL’s overtime rules, Patrick Mahomes led a game-winning drive to open the extra period and ended the game with a touchdown on the first possession.

Josh Allen didn’t even get the ball back, which feels like a crime. Immediately after one of the best games of all-time came to a close without the chance for Buffalo to answer, a debate began.

On one side, people stand by the NFL’s rules, saying that getting a defensive stop is part of the game and that the rules are fine as is. On the other side, people call for the rules to change to give both teams an opportunity to score.

The people who think that the rules are fine are wrong. If getting a defensive stop is such a big part of the game, then both teams should have to make one, not just whichever team did not get the ball.

As things currently are, the rules give a significant advantage to the team that wins the coin toss.

You win the coin toss, you get the ball. You get the ball, you have a better chance of scoring and winning on the first drive.

Of those who joined in on the debate, the Cheez-It Bowl got in on the jokes. At the end of 2021, the Cheez-It Bowl coin toss between Clemson and Iowa State was hosted by Prince Cheddward.

It made for an iconic photo. On Sunday, after the Chiefs game, the Bowl tweeted out some shade at the NFL and how the coin toss determined a large part of the outcome.
