Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly confident that they will soon secure a contract extension with their All-Pro defensive tackle, Chris Jones.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the team is “Optimistic” about their chances of finalizing a deal with Jones before the start of training camp next week.

This potential contract extension is expected to alleviate Jones’ substantial $28 million cap hit, subsequently creating more cap space for the Chiefs.

With this newfound flexibility, Kansas City could potentially make a strong push to acquire the services of free-agent All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

Chris Jones was recently named the second best Defensive Tackle in the NFL by executives, players, scouts and coaches.

Should the contract extension be successfully negotiated, it would significantly reduce Jones’ cap hit, offering the Chiefs greater financial maneuverability for the upcoming season.

While negotiations and contract extensions can be complex processes, the Chiefs seem determined to get a deal done with Chris Jones, displaying their commitment to retaining their key defensive talent.

As players prepare to report to training camp next week, the team hopes to finalize this contractual business before the start of the rigorous training regimen, allowing everyone involved to focus solely on the task at hand—preparing for the upcoming season and ultimately pursuing a Super Bowl championship.
