Kansas City Chiefs‘ star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, has initiated a holdout from training camp as contract negotiations between him and the team have reached an impasse.

According to reports by Nate Taylor of The Athletic, Jones is seeking an eye-popping $30 million per year, making it clear that he believes his performance on the field warrants such a substantial payday.

Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, expressed he’s “a bit surprised” at Jones’ decision to hold out, indicating that the team and player have yet to find common ground in the ongoing negotiations.

The current highest-paid defensive tackle in the league is Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, who commands an annual salary of $31.6 million.

As the standoff continues, Jones will be hit with significant non-waivable fines of $50,000 per day until he rejoins the team. However, it is evident that he is determined to hold out until he secures the contract he believes he deserves.

Jones’ value to the Chiefs cannot be underestimated, as he has proven to be one of the most dominant defenders in the NFL. In the 2022 season, he had a career-high performance with 15.5 sacks, tying his personal best, in addition to 29 quarterback hits and 17 tackles for a loss.

With an impressive tally of 65 career sacks in 107 games, his impact on the team’s defense has been unparalleled.

While the standoff remains unresolved, both Jones and the Chiefs must find common ground to ensure the star defensive tackle’s return to the field. Losing such a crucial player could have a significant impact on the Chiefs’ defensive prowess and their quest for future success.
