Christian Pulisic’s comments about the magnitude, or lack thereof, of a World Cup being played on American soil has angered American soccer fans. Pulisic has been accused of intentionally trying to act “nonchalant” about what others consider to be the biggest tournament of his life.
Despite the fact that Christian Pulisic is the captain of the United States Men’s National Team playing in a World Cup on its home soil, the AC Milan winger sees it as “just another tournament.”
“For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest. I get texts from my family and close friends—they’re definitely all excited about it, for sure,” Pulisic told GQ.
“I mean, I feel like I’m constantly playing in big games. For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest. A lot of people are trying to make it even more than it is. I get it, it’s a huge tournament [shrugs]. I’m looking forward to it.”
American soccer fans bothered by USMNT star Christian Pulisic attempting to act “nonchalant” about the 2026 World Cup
Pulisic’s comments did not sit well with American soccer fans, who accused the 27-year-old of attempting to pull a “nonchalant gimmick” — a popular term among soccer fans that describes players or athletes who act incredibly calm, unbothered, or indifferent — particularly after scoring a spectacular goal or making a big play — is often used to appear “cool” or composed, with some viewing it as a performative, artificial act designed to attract attention.
This guy has become more unlikable. I swear to god he wasn’t always like this, he was more down to earth, and a genuinely nice guy

“Attempting a nonchalant gimmick about a home World Cup is absolutely f—— disgraceful lol,” a viral tweet with nearly 2 million views read.
“He f—— sucks so much man, it’s a HOME WOLRD CUP, CUT THE S—!!” a second bemoaned.
“Imagine looking at the biggest tournament in the world and thinking it’s no different from the rest… yuck,” a third added.
“What a loser. World Cup being played in your country, and you’re nonchalant about it? No wonder USMNT gets no respect internationally. These dudes don’t give af. Absolute loser-think.”
“Why can’t the golden generation just be like ‘we get this tournament is absolutely massive, on our own soil and representing the greatest country in the world is an awesome honor and pressure’?”
“I understand not making the moment too big but being nonchalant about a World Cup is crazy.”
“Nonchalant gimmick for the World Cup ya this gonna be my biggest hatewatch of 2026.”

It’s not like Pulisic is entering the World Cup in particularly great form, either. Before scoring in a warm-up friendly against Senegal in late May, his last goal in any match came on December 28 when he scored in AC Milan’s win over Hellas Verona. As for his country, his last goal for the USMNT came when he scored against Jamaica in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League in November 2024.
