The coaches winning the most with the least expensive rosters.
The college football coaching carousel will be spinning at season’s end, as it does each and every year. Schools will look to identify their next leader in hopes of boosting their programs.
The first domino has already fallen with Mike Locksley being fired from Maryland. Many more are sure to follow. Who will be their replacements?
Being a successful coach in today’s era of college football involves juggling a number of tasks. First and foremost are the X’s and O’s. Staff hires are also crucial, and roster management has never been more of a priority.
The transfer portal and NIL have added another wrinkle. Those unable to pay top dollar for talent must rely on identifying prospects, developing, and praying their diamonds in the rough don’t bolt for a higher paying suitor down the road.
12 college football coaches maximizing talent.
Some coaches are better at doing more with less. These 12 leaders top the list in 2026. As a result, they’ll be hot commodities come the offseason.
These schools are likely spending $25 million or less for their rosters. For reference, the top spenders come in at twice that.
Numbers aren’t public so totals can vary from media outlet to media outlet. The Athletic provided budget ranges for every Power 4 team in the nation, which we’ll use for this list. These are the coaches winning despite low spending.
Will Stein

Kentucky is 6-1 and near the top of the SEC standings in Stein’s first season on campus. They’ve been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 campaign.
The Wildcats have knocked off LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Their only loss has come to Alabama.
This is Stein’s first year as a head coach. He’s proven himself in just seven games, and he’s done so with a roster estimated to be worth $23-26 million.
David Braun

David Braun leads the Northwestern football team onto the field.
Northwestern is quietly 5-1 with wins over Colorado, Penn State, and Michigan State. The Wildcats’ only loss came by six points on the road to defending national champion Indiana.
David Braun has elevated the program in four seasons on campus. He won eight games in his debut, and seven last year. This season could be his best.
While the Wildcats must still face Oregon, Iowa, and Ohio State, there is a path to nine wins. Braun has been successful with a roster estimated to be worth $17-21 million.
Kirk Ferentz

Ferentz is the winningest active coach in college football. He is the winningest coach in Iowa history. He typically succeeds despite being at a resource disadvantage relative to programs like Michigan and Ohio State.
That’s again the case in 2026. The Hawkeyes are 5-1 with victories over Iowa State, Michigan, and Washington. The only loss came to the Buckeyes. Iowa should be favored in the rest of its matchups. They might just find a way into the Big Ten title game with a roster estimated to be worth $17-21 million.
Morgan Scalley

Scalley is in his first season at Utah after replacing Kyle Whittingham, who left for Michigan. He’s been impressive thus far.
The Utes are 6-0. They annihilated SEC foe Arkansas in September. They’ve also taken down Iowa State, Colorado, and Kansas.
The path gets more difficult from here on, highlighted by a rivalry game vs. BYU. Utah remains a Big 12 championship favorite. They could make the College Football Playoff with a roster worth $18-22 million.
Eric Morris

Morris is in his first season at Oklahoma State after replacing Mike Gundy. He’s picked up a few big wins across his first six games.
The Cowboys knocked off Oregon in Game 2 before starting 2-0 in Big 12 play. They then narrowly lost to a Houston team currently ranked 14th in the nation to fall to 4-2, but the season has still been a great success. Morris has already matched the program’s win total from the last two years combined.
Oklahoma State’s roster is estimated to be between $15-19 million, making the head coach’s debut all the more impressive.
Brent Brennan

Brennan has been at Arizona for three seasons, filling a void left by Jedd Fisch after his move to Washington. He’s been able to largely pick up where his predecessor left off.
The Wildcats won nine games last year. This season, they’ve gotten off to a 5-1 start. The only loss came to BYU.
Arizona recently cracked the Top 25. It’s done so with a roster that ranks near the very bottom of the sport, estimated to be between $13-18 million.
Willie Fritz

Houston is 6-1 and ranked in the Top 15 of the AP Poll. The Cougars have knocked off the likes of Oregon State, UCF, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.
Fritz is in his third year with the program. He won 10 games last year. He might best that total in 2026.
The head coach is doing more with less, with his roster estimated to be worth $15-19 million.
Jake Dickert

Dickert is in Year 2 with Wake Forest. He won nine games last season. He might just make an ACC Championship Game this time around.
The Demon Deacons are 6-1 with a lone loss to Miami. They find themselves in a tie for second in the conference standings.
A low NIL budget is not keeping the coach from success. Dickert is winning with a roster valued between $16-20 million.
Manny Diaz

Duke is estimated to have the second-least expensive roster in college football. Manny Diaz is winning in spite of it.
The Blue Devils are 4-2 with victories over Illinois, Stanford, and Tulane. This comes after the program won the ACC last year.
Duke’s budget is said to fall between $12-15 million. Only Boston College is lower.
Rhett Lashlee

Rhett Lashlee speaks at an SMU press conference.
Lashlee is in Year 5 with the Mustangs, and he’s been successful in most every season. He has never posted a losing record. His teams won 11 games in 2023 and 2024. SMU made the playoff two years ago.
This year, a postseason invite should again be in the cards. The Mustangs are 5-1 with wins over FSU and Virginia. They will be in the mix for an ACC title.
SMU is succeeding with a roster estimated to be worth $21-23 million, which is significantly lower than many of its Lone Star State counterparts.
Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick speaks at a UNC press conference.
Bill Belichick’s first season in Chapel Hill was a disaster. The Tar Heels went 4-8. They were blown out by most every top team they faced. North Carolina’s flipped the script in 2026.
The team is 4-2 with a narrow loss to Clemson and an 11-point setback to Notre Dame. They’ve knocked off TCU, Pitt, and Duke.
North Carolina should line up a nice bowl game appearance. They may just double last year’s win total. Not a bad turnaround for a team spending around $20-25 million on the roster.
Kalani Sitake

Kalani Sitake on the sidelines during a BYU game.
Sitake tops this list due to his incredible success with a relatively low budget. BYU is 6-0 with a list of impressive wins. The Cougars have knocked off conference foes Arizona, Iowa State, and TCU. They just took down Notre Dame to move up to No. 2 in the AP Poll.
Sitake has done so despite being at an NIL disadvantage. He’s voiced concerns over spending in the past. It almost led him to leave for Penn State last offseason.
Ultimately, he chose to return to Provo for the 2026 campaign. That appears to have been the right decision. He’ll look to make the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff with his roster valued between $20-25 million.
