Colorado QB Julian Lewis did not play in a loss to Texas Tech.
The Colorado football team lost to Big 12 rival Texas Tech on Saturday night in Boulder, 29-7. Quarterback Isaac Wilson threw three interceptions, including a pick-six.
The Buffs did not have the option to bench Wilson for former starter Julian Lewis. Head coach Deion Sanders spoke on his absence after the game.
His comments have created questions as to Lewis’s status with the team. Is he still a member of the roster? Is he refusing to play?
Isaac Wilson started vs. Texas Tech.
The former four-star recruit began the season as QB1. He led a come-from-behind effort with a game-winning touchdown against Georgia Tech in the season opener. Colorado won its first two games with Lewis under center. That momentum has come to a halt.
The Buffs have lost three straight games. They were blown out by Northwestern. Lewis struggled, throwing a pair of interceptions.
He was benched in a loss to Baylor. Isaac Wilson started the most recent matchup with Texas Tech.
Unfortunately for Colorado, the change didn’t produce a different result. The offense, again, turned the ball over too many times. Wilson tossed a trio of interceptions. Joseph Williams added another.
Wilson had already thrown two of his picks before the fourth quarter. Still, the Buffs remained in the game with the score being 15-7.
That changed with Wilson’s third interception, which came in comical fashion.
SHORTEST PICK-SIX EVER!?!

The pick-six gave Texas Tech a two-score lead. They’d add another touchdown to win by 22 points.
Wilson’s struggles played a role in that final result. Deion Sanders says he could not replace him.
Where was Julian Lewis?
NEW: Coach Prime says he’d “love” for QB Julian Lewis to “come here and tell you what happened.”
Prime says that JuJu wasn’t benched: “It didn’t happen like that.”
What could have happened? 😳

“I would love for Juju to come in and tell you what happened,” Sanders said in the postgame press conference. “(I didn’t) bench Juju from first to third string. That’s not what went down. It didn’t happen like that.”
Coach Prime did not go into detail. He did not explain why Lewis was unavailable. Was it voluntary? Is he refusing to play? I don’t know. Lewis has not responded to the comments on social media.
Lewis is still on Colorado’s official roster. Deion Sanders says the quarterback competition is open, suggesting that Lewis is still in the mix for playing time. Not much else is known beyond that.
Transfer rumors have surrounded the passer since his benching last weekend. Sanders had not spoken to Lewis about his demotion midway through last week. Saturday’s absence only fuels the speculation.
Isaac Wilson threw two interceptions in the second half of a loss to the Red Raiders. He then threw a third because Julian Lewis couldn’t (or wouldn’t) play.
