The Washington Commanders have made a notable roster move ahead of the team’s training camp, parting ways with former All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell.

Norwell, who had been placed on the PUP list since May, was not occupying a roster spot. Nonetheless, the Commanders have decided to cut ties with the veteran player in an effort to save $4.4 million in salary.

The 31-year-old Norwell has been a consistent starter for almost a decade, building on his impressive All-Pro season in 2017. Last season, he started in all 16 games for the Commanders and committed just four penalties.

The team’s offensive line however, struggled as a group, surrendering the seventh-most sacks in the NFL.

With Norwell’s release, Washington appears to be exploring other options for the upcoming season, possibly seeking more affordable choices that could be ready to step in.

Norwell was entering the final year of his contract prior to his release, he brings veteran presence to potentially serve as a mentor for new offensive linemen.

Norwell’s journey in the NFL began in 2014 when he entered the league as an undrafted player from Ohio State, quickly establishing himself as a starter with the Carolina Panthers. During his tenure with the Panthers, Norwell played in Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season.

In 2017, he signed a lucrative five-year, $66.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, earning the honor of first team All-Pro in his inaugural year. Afterward, he joined the Commanders in 2022 on a two-year deal.

Throughout his career, Norwell has played in a total of 128 games.
