The Washington Commanders are in the playoff hunt with just two games remaining in the regular season. Now, Ron Rivera is making a stern decision about the quarterback situation.
Although the team is back in playoff contention thanks to Taylor Heinicke’s streaky play, it sounds like Washington is going with Carson Wentz the rest of the way.
According to Ian Rapoport, Ron Rivera has named Carson Wentz the starting quarterback for their next game against the Cleveland Browns. With the Commanders needing to win out, fans are wondering if starting Wentz is the right decision.

Taylor Heinicke basically brought life back into this team. Sure, he’s not perfect, but the team seems to go all out when he’s under center. Meanwhile, we have yet to see the Commanders’ rookie quarterback, Sam Howell get a shot. However, it sounds like Washington will give him a go in Week 18 if they lose to the Browns, per Josina Anderson.
I’m also told that if the #Commanders go into Week 18 with a “meaningful game” for playoff contention, they currently expect to start Carson Wentz then again too. If not, they likely will look to evaluate Sam Howell more next week.

In the end, Commanders fans are in turmoil over the whole ordeal. Considering what’s at stake, we have to agree that it’s a bit of a confusing move.
They are benching the QB that got them in the playoff hunt because he lost to the 2nd best team in the NFC. That is nuts.

We’re not entirely sure what the Commanders are thinking either.

At the end of the day, Ron Rivera believes this is what’s best for the Commanders. We’ll see if it’s a good decision or not when Washington takes on Cleveland on New Year’s Day.
