Back in June of 2019, the baseball world was stunned when former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot while visiting the Dominican Republic.

The gunshot caused damage to the beloved star’s gallbladder, liver and bowels, and he ended up spending seven weeks in the hospital.

Police said at the time that the shooting was a well-orchestrated hit and a chilling video appeared to back the claim up.

Less than two weeks after the shooting, 11 people had already been arrested in connection with the assassination attempt.

A whopping 13 people were arrested in connection with the shooting of David Ortiz

Now, over three years later, a total of 13 people have been charged with the attempted murder of former Major League Baseball player.

Of those 13 suspects, 10 have now been convicted and sentenced, reports El Nacional.

Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz, accused of actually shooting David Ortiz at point blank range, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

On video, it could be seen that Cruz tried to fire a second shot, but his gun jammed.

Eddy Vladimir Féliz García, the man who took the shooter to the Dial Bar and Lounge where the former baseball player was on the night of the shooting, also received a 30 year prison sentence.

Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta and José Eduardo Ciprián Lebrón were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Gabriel Alexander Féliz Vizcaíno was sentenced nine years behind bars.

Joel Rodríguez de la Cruz was sentenced to six years and six months. Porfirio Allende Dechamps Vásquez (Nene) and Julio César la Hoz were given five year prison sentences.

An investigation determined that the assassination attempt was actually intended to be carried out on a man named Sixto David Fernández. David Ortiz was allegedly confused for Fernández, who was also in the bar that night.

Many baseball fans had the same reaction to the news of David Ortiz’s shooter and accomplices being sentenced.
