In 2015, David Ortiz was asked about what it was like to visit the Dominican Republic as someone of his stature, and while he admitted he enjoyed going back to his native country, he expressed some concerns about his safety thanks to the threat of random and senseless violence he exposes himself to while there.

Last month, his fears were realized when he was the victim of what initially appeared to be a robbery gone wrong and was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the back while at a bar in Santo Domingo.

It was a story that was as tragic as it was bizarre, as shortly after the shooting, details started to trickle out that suggested the former member of the Red Sox was actually the target of a hit ordered by a local drug lord who put an $8,000 bounty on his head over a woman who initially denied being Ortiz’s mistress before claiming he’d bought her a Lexus just a few days before the incident.

Police would eventually arrest a number of suspects and the alleged shooter said the shooting was actually a case of mistaken identity, although the man who was supposedly the real target denied that claim.

In conclusion, it seems like no one really has any idea what the hell is going on down there and there are no signs we’re going to figure out the truth at any point in the near future.

What we do know, however, is that Big Papi has been making strides as far as his recovery is concerned, and a couple of weeks after undergoing his third surgery, the Red Sox announced he’d finally been released from the Boston hospital where he was being treated and headed home on Friday.

ESPN reports Ortiz will still be under medical supervision and will receive routine visits from a physician as he continues to rehabilitate but it’s great to hear the big man’s health is headed in the right direction.
