The annual Crosstown Classic between the Chicago Cubs and White Sox is always a very tense series as the teams battle for city supremacy. This year, it went down to the wire when catcher Edgar Quero won it for the White Sox with a dramatic 10th-inning walk-off two-run homer on Sunday.
Unfortunately, this year, rather than fans just arguing among themselves about which local team is superior, Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong joined in the trash-talking with fans.
In the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday, one of those exchanges took place. It occurred after infielder Miguel Vargas hit a ball to deep center with two men on base, with the White Sox behind 4-2. Crow-Armstrong, trying to catch it, collided with the wall, and the ball fell in for a hit, tying the score at 4-4.
A female White Sox fan behind the outfield fence then shouted at Crow-Armstrong, telling him he sucks and giving him a thumbs-down sign.
Rather than ignore her and carry on playing, Pete Crow-Armstrong decided to respond with a vulgarity, telling her “suck my f—— d— b—-.”
After the game, Pete Crow-Armstrong defended his comments to the White Sox fan.
“Some lady decided to start talking s— and I felt the need to say it back,” Crow-Armstrong said, according to ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers.
The White Sox fan shared her side of the story
The female White Sox fan later wrote on X that she was “just trying to celebrate my engagement party in the patio.” However, she also spoke with the Chicago Sun-Times and admitted, “Our goal the entire time we planned this was we knew PCA was in center field and we’re like, ‘We’re going to heckle him at some point.'”
She added, “Right when he was up at the fence, we’re like, ‘This is our prime opportunity, OK?’ So we just got booing him. I said he sucked, and then he said words that I don’t want to repeat, you shouldn’t say to a woman. And then both my brothers were up there against the fence, too.’’
Interestingly, that wasn’t the only time during the Cubs-White Sox series that Pete Crow-Armstrong got into a profanity-laden war of words with a fan that was caught on camera. He was also involved in another exchange with White Sox fans in which he said he would “f—” a fan up while standing in the on-deck circle. In his defense, the fan was reportedly talking badly about his mother, who PCA said was actually at the game.
