Dallas Cowboys fans are reacting to the new that wide receiver James Washington has been released. The pass catcher played just 15 snaps for the team this season.

Washington was supposed to help soften the blow of losing star wideout Amari Cooper, but he broke his foot on the first day of padded practice in training camp. He was unable to suit up until Week 14.

Just a few short weeks later, and he’s off the roster completely.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on the release Wednesday afternoon. Dallas fans are now posting reactions to the news online, with many believing the Cowboys mismanaged the entire situation.

One person wrote, “Truly one of the all-time Stephen Jones off-season moves. ‘Hey, we traded Amari Cooper away for peanuts, but don’t worry James Washington is here now!'”

The Cowboys got just a pair of late-round draft picks from the Browns in exchange for Cooper, who’s racked up over 1,100 yards this year despite the struggles Cleveland has seen under center.

Another Dallas Cowboys fan said, “I really can’t believe that James Washington was our Amari Cooper replacement/upgrade.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy commented on the release after the fact, and he had nothing but good things to say about the receiver.

“I feel bad about James’ opportunity here and timing of the injury was a big part of [why things didn’t work out.] … I think the world of him. … Hopefully, our paths cross again.”

Washington was a productive player during his stint in Pittsburgh. He’ll likely find a new home before the year is through. As for Dallas, the Cowboys will hope the addition of TY Hilton makes up for any lost receiving production as they pursue a Super Bowl title.
