Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin has spent the better part of the last three days fighting for his life after a scary incident on Monday Night Football.

The 24-year-old Pittsburgh native suffered a sudden cardiac arrest following a hit in the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin needed CPR for nine minutes before being resuscitated via an AED. He was then taken via ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he has remained since.

Initially, reports stated that Hamlin regained a pulse but was unable to breathe on his own. Slowly but surely those reports have improved. The Bills provided their most encouraging update yet on the situation on Thursday morning.

The team reported that Hamlin was awake and conscious as well as neurologically intact. This provided fans with a significant amount of optimism that he will be able to make a significant recovery.

Doctors from the medical center provided a further update on Thursday afternoon, including an incredible tid bit about Hamlin’s first actions after waking up.

Damar Hamlin Asked Doctors Who Won Games Between The Bills And Bengals

Lost in the importance of Hamlin’s health was the fact that the game was (relatively) important for both Buffalo and Cincinnati. The two teams are fighting for the potential top seed in the AFC Playoffs.

While the league works to sort out what to do with the AFC playoff seeding, most fans have focused on the status of Hamlin’s health.

As it turns out, the player himself was pretty concerned with the outcome of Monday night’s game. Though the game was postponed following his collapse, Hamlin had no idea.

Hamlin was unable to speak after waking up. Though he was able to communicate in writing. Doctors say that the Bills player immediately asked who won the game. To which they responded that he had won because he is still alive.

Doctors say the next step they’d like to see is for Hamlin to breathe on his own. But they added that his brain appears to be functioning properly.

It’s a miraculous story of recovery given where he was just three days ago. Here’s hoping his incredible progress continues.
