It is hard for me to comprehend the stress of being a high-stakes poker player. I’m not sure my heart would be able to handle the swings of winning or losing a quarter of a million dollars (in cash) in a single hand as Daniel Negreanu does here against Tom Dwan.

Sorry to spoil the ending there but it’s also in the headline. Instead of teasing the outcome of this PokerGo High Stakes poker hand, I thought we could make this more of an appreciation post about how Daniel Negreanu masterfully plays pocket kings.

This is a 9-handed table filled with some of the best poker players to ever play the game. In addition to Daniel Negreanu and Tom Dwan, the table features the legendary Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, James Bord, Patrik Antonius, Jean-Robert Bellande, Koray Aldemir, Jonathan Gibbs, and Kim Hultman. But this hand primarily features Negreanu and Dwan after the rest of the players get priced out.

Daniel Negreanu Wins $272K Cash With Pocket Kings Against Tom Dwan

The PokerGo commentators calling out Daniel’s ‘paws’ and ready to pounce each time he reaches for chips really is a perfect use of imagery here. Because that’s 100% the physical and psychological effect that Daniel Negreanu is going for with that action.

For anyone out there who isn’t familiar with Daniel’s opponent here, Tom Dwan, you should watch this and below. This one comes from a heads-up match between Tom Dwan and the one-and-only Phil Hellmuth, the greatest tournament poker player of all time.

Who is poker pro Tom Dwan?

Daniel Negreanu’s opponent here, Tom Dwan, has had a successful World Series of Poker and WSP career but he’s been a lot more fortunate outside of those two staples. Dwan has cashed 10 times in World Series of Poker events for $778,297 and twice in World Poker Tour (WPT) events for $508,914.

That’s well over a million dollars in winnings but Tom Dwan has seen significantly more success in casino poker tournaments. He’s cashed in those 32 times for a recorded $4,489,505. Of course, that hand above was a straight cash game and Dwan is clearly successful on that front.

I was fortunate enough to interview Phil Hellmuth during the 2021 World Series of Poker just before the Main Event. He was on one of the biggest heaters of his life. We talked about his legacy, success, how he stays fresh, feuds with other poker players, and more. You can read that Phil Hellmuth interview in full here.
