The ‘new look’ Miami Dolphins feature a fresh set of coaches after Brian Flores was replaced by Mike McDaniel who brought in a new staff. Miami’s new QB coach and pass game coordinator Darrell Bevell spoke with the NFL media on Wednesday for his first time since accepting the position with the Miami Dolphins and his comments were illuminating and perplexing.
Reading through the comments from Darrell Bevell, everything seemed to start positively but then it quickly saw a change of tone. Or rather, his comments grew perplexing and I dare say this is the first red flag we’re seeing from Miami’s new staff.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Darrell Bevell kicked it off by saying the new Miami offense would be ‘built and tailored’ to fit quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He expressed that’s better than trying to force a “round peg in the square hole.” That’s good, right? This approach has clearly worked for Baltimore and Kansas City.
But then Darrell Bevell talked about needing to see the ball leave Tua Tagovailoa’s hands in person because he’s unable to assess the quarterback from watching tape. That’s a real thing an NFL QB coach said, he can’t assess his QB on tape…
Miami QB Coach Darrell Bevell Shares First Comments On Tua Tagovailoa
“I think it’s important for me to be able to see the ball coming out of his hand in person. I can see it on tape. I can see him making some of the throws. There are questions that I have. But I want to see the ball come out of his hand in person.
That’s the one thing for me, always on tape, is it’s hard to tell the true velocity, so I want to get him out here on the grass and see exactly what it looks like. From what I’ve seen we’ll definitely be able to have high success from him being able to throw the football. He can make many of the throws that we’re going to ask him to do. And the ones that he can’t then we’re going to do something different.”
I find these comments from Darrell Bevell to be incredibly odd for a man who has been coaching in the NFL since the year 2000 and has been coaching football since 1996. Bevell was a quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers. He has been an offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. And he was the interim head coach for the Jags.
But this guy has trouble assessing a quarterback on tape? This is a quarterback who was drafted 5th overall and has had a high profile since his time at Alabama.
Some Dolphins Fans Are Perplexed By Bevell’s Comments
That's an Urban Meyer phrase!!!!

He’s seen Tua play in person before. The Dolphins and Jaguars met at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London while Darrell Bevell was still with Jacksonville. Was he not watching on the field?
He saw it in London when the Tua went pass happy.

I remember how happy Seahawks fans were when he left and how loud they were in wanting him out. Then he went to the Jags.

There’s also this:
Found one thing interesting about my conversation with new Dolphins QB Darrell Bevell. He talked about getting Tua to the point where he’s back playing confidently.
You can sense this new coaching staff feels he’s been abused. pic.twitter.com/rvvgjWtpSR

Darrell Bevell could very well be a magic maker for the Miami Dolphins and Tua. That could flip the switch in South Florida but that’s a conversation to have a year from now once we’ve seen what the Dolphins are able to do this off-season.
