Former five-star talent Cormani McClain is leaving Deion Sanders and Colorado. The cornerback, who came to Boulder highly regarded, didn’t like how his situation played out with the Buffs.

McClain was expected to make an early impact, but instead, he saw the bench for a large part of his freshman campaign. Making things worse, he was called out very publicly by his head coach on multiple occasions.

When he did finally make his first start of the year, he was torched badly, and subsequently benched. It was an adjustment that took more time than he’d anticipated.

While his introduction to college football wasn’t what he’d hoped for, most thought his second season with the program would see an uptick in playing time. That may not have been the case given what’s transpired this spring.

McClain sent an ominous message on social media about his future with the team earlier this week. That led to rumors about his imminent transfer, which he later confirmed on Instagram.

Still seemingly unhappy with his standing on the depth chart, McClain opted to bolt for the transfer portal in the middle of the spring practice season.

Deion Sanders has since commented on Cormani McClain’s decision.

The head coach wished him luck at his next stop while subtly questioning the defender’s on- and off-field effort.

“I pray to God that he goes to a program that challenges him, as well as holds him accountable, and develop him as a young man,” Prime said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t the program that could accomplish that…

“He has a tremendous amount of talent, but he has to want it.”

Deion Sanders suggests that McClain wasn’t as motivated as he could’ve been, whether that be in the weight room, film study, or on the field.

That supposed lack of dedication could be the reason for his not seeing the field much in Year 1.

A number of programs will be interested in scooping up the cornerback as he certainly boasts talent. Coach Prime hopes that he finds the right fit.
