Deion Sanders’ Recruiting Pitch Is Different Than Most Because He Has Nothing To ‘Sell’ At Jackson State

Deion Sanders has been at Jackson State for less than two years but he has already turned around the entire program. In addition to the results on the field, Coach Prime has shook up the entire college football recruiting landscape.

The Tigers went 4-3 in Sanders’ first year at the helm but landed the No. 55-ranked recruiting class nationally, which is a big deal for an FCS program. In year two, after going 11-2 and winning the SWAC, Jackson State landed multiple Power 5 conference program transfers, flipped a four-star wide receiver away from Florida State and Miami, and flipped the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit away from Florida State on signing day.

What Coach Prime is building in Mississippi is impressive.

Sanders recently joined the Dan Patrick Show and discussed his pitch to recruits on why they should play for the Tigers. He says that when he is in pursuit of talent, he doesn’t “sell” them on anything, because he has nothing to sell.

Jackson State doesn’t have the resources that a Power 5 program might. Jackson State isn’t a flashy big-name school with every game televised. In a lot of ways, if not most ways, Jackson State is not able to position itself as the “premier” program.

But Sanders doesn’t need all of that to get his message across.

“I don’t have to sell you,” Sanders said. “I ain’t selling nothing. That’s the thing about it, I don’t sell anything. I don’t have anything sell. I’m going to allow you to understand that I’ve sat on three sides of the table. I’ve been in the living room and I’m the parent, I’ve been the player and now I’m the coach. That’s a heck of an advantage, because I know the thought process of everyone in the room. I’m not selling anything, but I’m going to promise you that if you send me a boy, I’m going to send you back a man.”
