An Alabama high school is offering up to $180,000 a year for someone to coach its football team. That’s right. A high school football team.
Dothan High School in Alabama is looking for a new head coach after Jed Kennedy resigned in September, and the school district apparently isn’t messing around in finding his replacement.
According to On3, Dothan City Schools is offering between $150,000 and $180,000 annually for the position.
By comparison, the average Alabama teacher makes around $62,659 a year. So Dothan’s new high school football coach could make almost three times that amount.
Alabama High School Will Pay Big Money To Turn Around Football Program
Dexerto reports that the job is full-time, 12 months a year, and the school district is also offering extra money to attract assistant coaches.
Of course, Dothan High School isn’t offering that kind of money just to have someone stand on the sidelines wearing a headset. Dothan finished the 2026 regular season with a 3-7 record, so there’s definitely some work to be done.
The school wants a coach with a proven history of winning, making the playoffs and developing championship-caliber teams.

Previous coach Jed Kennedy resigned on September 25 after the Wolves started the season 2-3. He compiled a 29-19 record during his time at Dothan. Assistant coach Jimmie Tyson then took over as interim head coach.
Former Dothan Football Coach Went Viral For Tackling His Own Assistant
Interestingly, former Dothan High School football coach Jed Kennedy made headlines a few years ago for something that had absolutely nothing to do with winning high school football games. Back in 2022, Kennedy was caught on video tackling one of his volunteer assistant coaches during a game.
The bizarre incident followed the volunteer assistant’s penalty for sideline interference during a game against Opelika.
Naturally, the video went viral, and many people called for Kennedy to be fired. He didn’t. As previously mentioned, Kennedy remained Dothan’s head coach until this September.
According to WTVY, Kennedy only resigned after the team’s disappointing start this season, but he remained employed by the school district. One has to assume he isn’t making $180,000 a year.
