SEC Team Ridiculed For Hiring An OC That Was Recently Voted ‘Worst Playcaller In The NFL’

The South Carolina Gamecocks have made one of the more questionable hires of the college football offseason. Head coach Shane Beamer plans to fill his open offensive coordinator position with former NFL play caller Dowell Loggains.

Loggains spent time with the Bears, Dolphins, Titans, and Jets as an OC before landing at Arkansas last year as a tight ends coach. His time in the NFL didn’t go as expected, resulting in that demotion to the collegiate level.

In his four stops as coordinator, his offenses consistently finished near the bottom of the league. The ’13 Titans ranked 19th in scoring on their way to a 7-9 record. That inaugural season would be his best, at least according to the numbers.

With the Bears, his offenses ranked 28th and 29th in points per game. With the Dolphins, it was a 26th place finish. He then took a shot with the Jets, but his putrid offensive output ranked 31st and then dead last in the NFL over the ’19 and ’20 seasons.

Adding insult to injury, Dowell Loggains was named the NFL’s worst play caller in 2017 by ESPN.

Predictability and lack of creativity were at the root of the issue as he unsuccessfully tried to guide rookie Mitchell Trubisky to a successful debut season. Those struggles obviously continued in stints with Ryan Tannehill in Miami and Sam Darnold in New York.

The hire wasn’t exactly the home run that South Carolina fans were hoping after being linked to Dan Mullen over the last few weeks. Following two consecutive campaigns of subpar offensive output, previous OC Marcus Satterfield moved on to Nebraska. Prior to that, the Gamecocks saw some pretty stagnant units under Kurt Roper, Bryan McLendon, and Mike Bobo.

Basically, everyone not named Steve Spurrier has been a letdown of late.

In spite of the lack of scoring, the Gamecocks found a way to win 15 games over the last two seasons. There was momentum surrounding the program as it prepares for a Gator Bowl matchup versus Notre Dame. It doesn’t appear that Beamer was able to capitalize on that momentum, and his most recent hire has many fans down bad.

One Gamecock fan wrote, “All positive momentum from the last 2 weeks of the season is gone,” while another said, “You know, not my favorite day ever to be a SC fan.”

This South Carolina supporter wrote, “Beamer telling us how attractive this job was and how many calls he got, and this is what we end up with,” after hearing about the Dowell Loggains hire.

But it wasn’t just Gamecock fans who were talking. Many opposing fans took a moment to jab at their rival.

We’ll see how it works out for Dowell Loggains and the Gamecocks. They’ll have plenty of doubters to prove wrong in Columbia.
