Every football player at any level dreams of playing in and winning the Super Bowl. But, for San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw, his dream has turned into a nightmare.

Greenlaw suffered an incredibly freaky injury running onto the Allegiant Stadium playing surface after a 49ers’ punt in the second quarter of Super Bowl LVIII.

That is just the absolute worst worst way to get injured in a Super Bowl that I can think of. Greenlaw was taken off the field in a cart and is likely undergoing tests. I can hardly imagine that those results would allow him to return to the field.

Dre Greenlaw had a fantastic season this year, racking up 120 total tackles in fifteen games. Alongside Fred Warner, Greenlaw makes up arguably the league’s best linebacker duo.

This is no doubt a huge blow to the 49ers defense, assuming that Dre Greenlaw can’t return. He is one of the players responsible for slowing down Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, a key job for the San Francisco defense. Expect backup Oren Burks to get the bulk of Greenlaw’s snaps the rest of the way.

At halftime, San Francisco leads Kansas City, 10-3.
