Former Texas Tech men’s basketball player Drew Steffe is officially in the transfer portal. His decision to leave the program comes about halfway through his freshman season.

Steffe, a 6-foot-5 forward, has been absent from the college basketball team over the past few weeks. Head coach Grant McCasland said that the time away has been for “family reasons.”

No further information has been provided at this time.

Although the full story remains unclear at this time, Drew’s father — Matt — briefly acknowledged the rumors surrounding his son on social media. The former Division II men’s basketball All American at Quincy University did not expand on the ongoing situation.

He since removed his repost after a still image screenshot of his activity went viral.

Mr. Steffe shared a video that was initially posted by the Red Raiders-specific affiliate for Barstool.

Drew’s father also “liked” two posts that stated their disappointment surrounding the former three-star recruit’s decision to enter the transfer portal.

All of the rumors are unsubstantiated at this point. There is no clear indication as to why Steffe entered the transfer portal or what the circumstances surrounding his family might be. We wish them the best!

We do know that his exit has nothing to do with him or his behavior. Steffe remains in good standing with the program. Texas Tech was prepared to “welcome him back whenever he is ready” as of Dec. 29, when McCasland first addressed the circumstances surrounding the first-year forward’s sabbatical.

Steffe initially signed his National Letter of Intent under former head coach Mark Adams. He chose to honor his commitment after McCasland was hired.

Because Steffe had yet to see the floor this season in 13 games for the Red Raiders, it was expected that he would take a redshirt year in 2023/24. His decision to leave likely does not change those intentions.
