A viral video shows a Wingstop location with a 'cashless' sign on the window. But is the chain really going cash-free?
Cash used to be king. Now, many just find it annoying.
In 2012, cash accounted for 40% of all consumer transactions. In 2026, they accounted for just under 13% of all consumer transactions—and many are trying to find ways to do away with cash entirely.
For example, a recent study found that 1 in 4 Americans say they frequently leave their wallet at home, as many payments can simply be handled via contactless phone payment. This is especially the case for younger generations; over 40% of Gen Z members treat their phone or smartwatch as their primary payment method.
Some businesses are responding to this trend by going cashless. However, this move has proven pretty controversial, as a recent viral
What’s Going On At This Wingstop?
In a video with over 1.1 million views, TikTok user @foe_madeulaugh shows himself in front of a Wingstop location.
Right as the video starts, he crudely slaps a sticker onto the window of the building. The sticker reads, “We’re cashless! This is a cashless location. We welcome debit, credit card, and contactless payments.”
“We do not take cash,” the TikToker says. “Last time I’m saying it.”
This video immediately went viral, being reposted across X to accounts like @WallStreetApes and @ClownWorld and garnering millions of additional views before being reported on by major outlets like the New York Post and US Sun. But is Wingstop really doing away with cash payments?
Is This Real?
Wingstop has not confirmed whether this location is truly going cashless. Back in 2022, the chain debuted what it called a prototype “restaurant of the future.” The location featured no seating, with its primary focus being carry-out and delivery orders. It was also cashless.
That said, this was just a single store—and much of the recent evidence of Wingstop “going cashless” only points back to the video from TikTok user @foe_madeulaugh, who captioned it with #comedy.
He later posted another video claiming that Taco Bell had also gone cashless. While Taco Bell has previously announced that they aspire to having “100% of our global system sales…powered by digital” at a future date, it does not appear that the chain has gone completely cashless, even as some locations get rid of cash payments.
That said, there is evidence that at least a few Wingstop locations have done away with cash. Photos from a Wingstop location in Auburn, Washington, have visible “We’re cashless” signs, and a Facebook post concerning an Alabama location notes that the restaurant does not accept cash.
In short, it’s possible that your local Wingstop is cashless—but it does not appear to be happening nationwide.
Is This Legal?
In response to this video, many viewers wondered if a restaurant can legally stop accepting cash. The argument from these viewers is that cash is legal tender, and restaurants are required to accept legal tender.
This isn’t exactly true, though it depends on the state.
According to the Federal Reserve, “There is no federal statute mandating that a private business, a person, or an organization must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law that says otherwise.”
That second part is where things get a little complicated. There are numerous states and cities that require businesses to accept cash payment. For example, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Colorado, and Delaware all require businesses to accept cash payments, though some allow for limited exceptions.
The reason for this required acceptance of cash generally relates to either privacy concerns regarding digital payments or accommodations for unbanked people. The Federal Reserve states that 6% of American adults are unbanked as of 2024.
Viewers Have Thoughts
In the comments section of the video, users expressed their views on businesses going cashless.
“Ok so your trying to lose 50% of the business,” declared a user.
“Why because the newer generation can’t count money?!?” asked another.
“I’ll never go to a place of business that does not accept cash. Ever,” declared a third.
